Explore Beyond Football: Super Bowl Week Adventures in the San Francisco Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO — Experience the vibrant sights along The Embarcadero on San Francisco's stunning waterfront. Start your journey at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, where you'll find delicious food options, great people-watching, and unique souvenirs.

If you're up for a scenic adventure, venture outside the city for renowned wine tasting or take in breathtaking coastal drives.

Visitors flocking to the Bay Area for the Super Bowl will find a plethora of dining and outdoor experiences, all within a couple of hours from San Francisco.

While the focus of the week is primarily on football — featuring the Patriots vs. Seahawks at Levi's Stadium on Feb. 8 — there are plenty of entertainment options available before Super Bowl Sunday.

Be sure to visit the famous Ferry Building on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays, where you can explore one of the country’s most popular farmers' markets, offering both indoor and outdoor food and shopping.

From world-class vineyards in Napa Valley to spectacular ocean views along the 17-Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula, there’s something for everyone. Note that there is a fee for vehicles on the 17-Mile Drive, but walking and biking are free. Be cautious, as winter can bring fog.

Walking the Golden Gate Bridge is a classic activity, but make sure to bring a windbreaker or light rain jacket to stay comfortable. For those interested in exploring the infamous Alcatraz, be sure to book your tour in advance, as spots fill up quickly, especially on weekends.

At Alcatraz, visitors can go inside the cells and listen to audio recordings of former inmates, providing a gripping glimpse into the prison's history.

For a more natural experience, hike beneath the towering coast redwoods at Muir Woods National Monument, just under an hour from the city. This protected area has been a national monument since 1908 and offers historical insights alongside stunning scenery.

Napa and Sonoma are just over an hour away, offering exquisite wine tasting and unique experiences like riding the Napa Valley Wine Train.

Back in San Francisco, the Presidio is a great place to delve into the city’s rich history, while Golden Gate Park presents numerous opportunities for walking and exercise.

A visit to the Castro District, known for its LGBTQ+ history, pays homage to civil rights leader Harvey Milk.

Consider taking a ferry from the Ferry Building to Oakland’s Jack London Square or to Sausalito for lunch, where you can enjoy views of iconic landmarks like Coit Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge from the water.

Head to North Beach for delicious Italian cuisine, including Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, a must-try spot. This neighborhood is also home to City Lights Booksellers & Publishers, a historic bookstore founded in 1953.

San Francisco’s vintage cable cars are a fun way to navigate the city’s steep hills and are a major tourist attraction.

Don't miss out on the Mission District, known for its fantastic burritos. If you find yourself in the East Bay, Fentons Creamery in Oakland is a charming ice cream parlor that’s worth the wait.

If you’re traveling with teenagers, consider visiting Stanford University or UC Berkeley, both of which boast beautiful campuses and nearby attractions.
