Thomas Tours: An Indian Student’s Initiative to Uplift Graduate Spirits in London

A graduate from a village in Kerala has established a distinctive tour guide service named Thomas Tours in London. This initiative aims to support fellow graduates as they face a challenging job market.

Jame Thomas Mathew, who recently earned his Master's in macro-economics from the London School of Economics, launched this venture to combine earning a living wage with uplifting the spirits of new jobseekers.

At just 23 years old, Jame’s service, named after his grandfather, offers part-time employment opportunities for graduates. He utilizes the budget-friendly strategies he learned as a student to create tours that allow visitors to experience London authentically and affordably.

“Our unique selling point is providing customized day tours, guiding visitors like a local using public transport and exploring on foot,” Jame explains.

As a Graduate Route visa holder, he understands the struggles of job hunting against a backdrop of economic challenges and anti-immigrant sentiments.

Many graduates often find themselves stuck in low-paying retail positions that hinder their career progress. Jame aims to change that by enabling graduates to earn a London Living Wage while pursuing their career aspirations.

Through Thomas Tours, Jame offers flexibility, allowing graduates to work as guides for a few days while dedicating the rest of the week to job applications and interviews.

The service features a variety of itineraries, including visits to major landmarks, museums, shopping districts, and theater experiences. In just a few days since its launch, Jame has already secured bookings for upcoming months.

Clients engage in a free initial chat to customize their tour experiences, with payments made only at the meeting point, ensuring transparency and trust.

“Every penny goes directly to the graduate, who provides a personalized tour, allowing clients to contribute to fair wages in a city they love,” Jame reflects.

This initiative not only supports graduates financially but also fosters connections with diverse travelers, potentially opening doors to future employment.

With a focus on mental health, Thomas Tours aims to combat feelings of isolation that many job seekers face, providing a sense of purpose and community.

Jame's extensive knowledge of London, gained from guiding family members and friends, positions him well to help others enjoy the city to its fullest.

“Every corner of London is rich in history. This graduate-led initiative will guide everyone to famous landmarks and hidden gems at affordable prices,” he adds.
