Macron Advocates for Vine Removal Amid Declining French Wine Sales

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the necessity of removing unprofitable grape vines to rejuvenate the struggling wine sector, which he is committed to supporting.

During his visit to the Wine Paris trade show, Macron reassured producers that their industry is integral to "France's way of life".

In response to the industry's challenges, the government introduced a 130-million-euro "arrachage" fund, initiated last Friday, providing subsidies to vine owners willing to uproot their non-productive vineyards.

"It has to be done... so that the others retain their value," Macron stated.

The French wine industry is grappling with overproduction driven by diminishing demand due to evolving drinking habits, increased competition, and export hurdles.

Efforts to remove vines are particularly focused on regions known for producing less popular low-cost reds, such as Bordeaux and Languedoc.

In previous years, France has subsidized the conversion of surplus wine into industrial ethanol.

According to the CNAOC, the French wine sector faces a growing surplus of about 100,000 hectares, with 50,000 hectares already uprooted and an additional 30,000 expected under the new program.

Macron's recent visit marked the first time a sitting president has attended Wine Paris since 2015.

He received various gifts, including a bottle humorously labeled "For Sure" alongside a pair of aviator sunglasses, referencing his recent viral speech.

After inspecting a magnum of Chinese wine, he highlighted the country's ability to produce quality wine, a concern for French producers.

The French wine industry is also feeling the impact of increased tariffs on European alcoholic beverages imposed by the U.S., which have stifled exports.

French customs data revealed that exports to the U.S., the largest market for French wine, fell by 20 percent last year, totaling 3.2 billion euros.

Macron stressed the importance of effectively exporting within Europe, defending against aggressive market practices, and exploring new markets.

He pointed to India, Canada, and Brazil as promising markets, supported by recent EU free-trade agreements.

Additionally, Wine Paris introduced a new section dedicated to low- or no-alcohol wines, reflecting the rising demand for such products.

The wine and spirits industry in France supports approximately 600,000 jobs and generates around 32 billion euros in annual revenue, with half derived from exports.
