Quick and Nutritious: 10-Minute Chinese Steamed Eggs Recipe

Chinese steamed eggs are a delightful and nutritious dish that can be prepared in just 10 minutes. This recipe, shared by nutritionist Aathira Sethumadhavan, is perfect for anyone seeking a low-calorie, protein-rich meal.


This dish is soft and silky, making it a great option for both a snack or a side dish alongside rice and vegetables. With only two eggs and simple seasonings, it exemplifies how comfort food can be straightforward and healthy.


Ingredients for Chinese Steamed Eggs:

  • 2 eggs
  • 200 ml hot water (¾ cup + 1 tbsp)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of pepper
  • Pinch of mushroom or chicken stock powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp light soy sauce, for finishing
  • Chilli crisp or flakes, to taste (optional)
  • 2 tsp chopped spring onions

Method of Preparation:

  1. Crack the eggs into a bowl and add salt, pepper, and optional stock powder.
  2. Whisk gently to combine, avoiding excess foam.
  3. Pour in the hot water (200 ml) and whisk until smooth.
  4. Strain off any bubbles for a silky finish.
  5. Cover with a plate or foil and steam on low-medium heat for 7-8 minutes.
  6. Let it rest in the steamer for an additional 2 minutes before serving.
  7. Finish with light soy sauce, chilli crisp or flakes, and fresh spring onions.

Serving Ideas:

  • Pair with rice and stir-fried greens.
  • Add prawns, mushrooms, or minced chicken before steaming.
  • Keep it simple for a soothing, GERD-friendly meal.

This dish provides approximately 11 grams of protein, 8.5 grams of fat, and around 128 calories, making it a fantastic addition to a healthy diet.
