Chase Your Health, Not Just Your Weight: Insights from Dr. Paloschi

Dr. Thomas Paloschi, a longevity expert, emphasizes that weight alone is not a true indicator of health. Instead, he advocates for focusing on body composition and metabolic health. In his view, what truly matters is the makeup of your weight, including muscle, fat, and bone density.


Many individuals embark on their fitness journeys with the wrong mindset, primarily fixating on the number on the scale. However, Dr. Paloschi argues that this approach can be misleading. He states, 'Your body weight is not a singular figure; it encompasses bone, fat, muscle, and organs.'


He highlights that a decrease in muscle mass can lead to weight loss, which is not necessarily a positive outcome. Instead, the focus should be on maintaining or increasing muscle while reducing visceral fat for improved health.


Dr. Paloschi criticizes BMI (Body Mass Index) for its inability to accurately reflect one's health status. Two individuals with the same BMI may have vastly different body compositions. He suggests tracking metrics such as:


  • Lean mass (muscle) - prioritize its growth and preservation
  • Fat mass - particularly where it is stored
  • Bone density - an important factor for longevity

To accurately measure body fat percentage, Dr. Paloschi recommends three methods:


  • MRI - the gold standard for visualizing fat distribution
  • DEXA - a quick and relatively low-radiation option
  • BIA (home scales) - while not very accurate, they can be useful for tracking trends over time

He also distinguishes between two types of fat:


  • Subcutaneous fat - found just beneath the skin
  • Visceral fat - located around internal organs, linked to metabolic diseases

Dr. Paloschi advises that tracking visceral fat is crucial for overall health. He warns against extremes in body fat percentage, noting that a higher body fat percentage is associated with increased mortality risk. Instead, individuals should aim to maintain a body fat percentage within their genetic range.


In conclusion, building muscle should be prioritized over merely losing weight. Dr. Paloschi suggests, 'It’s not about being lighter; it’s about having more lean muscle, less visceral fat, and better metabolic health.' In essence, the goal should be to enhance health metrics rather than just the scale's number.
