Recognizing Kidney Issues: 5 Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
The kidneys play a vital role in maintaining overall health, filtering waste and toxins from the blood. It’s essential to be aware of the early signs of kidney problems to seek timely medical intervention.
Dr. Hemand Chaugule, a consultant nephrologist at Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai, highlights five key signs to watch for:
1. Changes in Urination Patterns
A shift in urination frequency or appearance can indicate kidney issues. If you notice you are urinating more or less than usual, or if your urine appears foamy, it’s time to consult a doctor.
2. Swelling in Feet, Ankles, or Around the Eyes
Fluid retention can cause noticeable swelling in various parts of the body. This occurs when the kidneys fail to filter fluids effectively, leading to localized puffiness.
3. Unremitting Fatigue and Weakness
Persistent tiredness may signal declining kidney function. The kidneys produce a hormone that regulates red blood cell production; if they are impaired, it can lead to anemia.
4. Loss of Appetite, Nausea, or Metallic Taste
A reduced appetite or a constant feeling of nausea can be early indicators of kidney damage. Don’t dismiss these symptoms as mere diet changes.
5. Difficult-to-Control Hypertension
If you struggle to manage high blood pressure, especially at a young age, it may point to underlying kidney issues. Regular blood and urine tests are recommended for those with diabetes or a family history of kidney disease.
Being vigilant about these signs can help in the early detection and treatment of kidney problems.
