A Journey Through Time: SP Sethi and the Legacy of SRCC’s 100 Years

At 98 years old, Satya Pal Sethi, the oldest living alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), reflects on his remarkable college days as the institution celebrates its centenary.

“I still see the college canteen in my dreams,” he shares nostalgically. Sadly, all of his college friends have passed away, leaving him as the sole survivor of that era.

When Sethi joined the college in the late 1940s, it was known as The Commercial College in Daryaganj. At that time, India was still finding its footing post-independence, and commerce was a practical skill rather than an academic pursuit.

As a member of the Batch of 1950, Sethi and his peers unknowingly helped shape the identity of SRCC, attending lectures, playing hockey, and forming lifelong friendships.

Today, as SRCC turns 100, Sethi embodies the essence of the college's enduring spirit. He recalls the early days marked by discipline and ambition, and how students found ways to enjoy their time, even skipping classes occasionally.

In 1954, SRCC moved to North Campus, expanding both its facilities and academic offerings, ultimately becoming one of India's premier commerce institutions. Sethi recalls how the reputation of the college grew through word-of-mouth, with respect earned from the community.

Sethi was not just a student; he was also the captain of the Delhi University hockey team. His experiences as a student-athlete were enriching as the faculty ensured academic support for those balancing sports and studies.

One of the most touching aspects of his narrative is the enduring friendships he maintained for over 70 years with his college mates, meeting weekly despite the passing of time and friends.

The legacy of SRCC has continued with Sethi's family. His son, Sunil, graduated in 1975, followed by his grandsons, making them a three-generation family of 'Ramites.'

As SRCC celebrates its centenary, it stands as a bridge between its historical roots and its current global aspirations. The college’s legacy is not just in its academic excellence but also in the profound connections it fosters among its students.

Sethi concludes that SRCC gave him confidence and standards, emphasizing that life is about taking something and passing it on in better shape.
