Ai Weiwei: Navigating Censorship and Dissent in China and the West

By Catarina Demony

Censorship has been a constant in Ai Weiwei’s life. The 68-year-old Chinese dissident, renowned for his activist art, has faced restrictions on his films, sculptures, and other works due to their criticism of China and advocacy for global human rights.

In a recent interview in London ahead of the launch of his new book “On Censorship,” Ai discussed his first return to China in a decade, the influence of AI on freedom of expression, and the diminishing space for free speech in the West.

Ai reflects on the similarities of censorship in China and the West, noting that in China, censorship is tied to state policies and sensitive topics, whereas in the West, it stems not only from state actions but also from companies and institutions.

He argues that the “right not to be watched” is disappearing as reliance on artificial intelligence increases, suggesting that technology can both exacerbate surveillance and potentially counter it. He emphasizes the importance of privacy for personal relationships and the essence of humanity.

Discussing political dynamics, Ai views European leaders' visits to China as strategic, reflecting a balance of power rather than mere business interests. He believes that Western leaders should not only engage with China but also confront issues of censorship and human rights, acknowledging the West's own record on these matters.

Upon returning to China, Ai experienced mixed emotions; while familiar, the country felt markedly different due to its growing international power. He noted a lack of meaningful ideological discussions in China, highlighting a cultural shift.

Despite a courteous reception during his visit, Ai remains cautious about the future of dissenting art. He warns that challenging authority is becoming increasingly difficult and stresses the need for integrity among artists.

Ai advises younger generations of artists to weigh the risks of speaking out, recognizing the personal cost that often accompanies truth-telling in oppressive environments. Ultimately, he hopes for a future where the next generation may not have to endure the same struggles he has faced.

In closing, Ai expresses hope that individuals will act to protect their consciousness and essential rights, asserting that such actions are crucial for humanity's survival in an increasingly technical world.
