Author Harinder Singh Sikka Critiques Meghna Gulzar’s Adaptation of Raazi
Following the success of Aditya Dhar's films Dhurandhar and its sequel, Dhurandhar The Revenge, author Harinder Singh Sikka has stirred discussion regarding his novel Calling Sehmat and its film adaptation Raazi, directed by Meghna Gulzar. Despite Raazi's acclaim and box office success, Sikka expressed regret over his choice of director, suggesting that Gulzar altered the narrative's essence.
Sikka recently took to social media to share his thoughts, highlighting how Calling Sehmat remains a significant work in espionage literature. He mentioned that appointing Meghna Gulzar was a significant error on his part, citing her ideological bias as a reason for diminishing the protagonist's spirit in the film. He stated, "Dhurandhar 2 gave you a cinematic glimpse. Here's where the real stories begin," emphasizing the book's enduring impact.
In a follow-up tweet, he criticized Gulzar's approach, particularly regarding historical accuracy in her films, including one about Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, claiming it lacked critical context about the treatment of the patriot. He expressed pain over how her direction twisted narratives to fit a specific agenda.
When questioned about why he is speaking out now, Sikka clarified that he has voiced his objections for years, aiming to raise awareness about the integrity of storytelling in cinema. He urged people to recognize the importance of truthful narratives, especially in adaptations of significant historical events.
What are your thoughts on Raazi? Did you find it true to the original story?
