Chesney the Kangaroo’s Thrilling Escape: A Three-Day Adventure

How does a kangaroo escape a petting zoo? For Chesney, the adventurous kangaroo, it involved scaling an eight-foot fence and embarking on a three-day escapade, leaving his keeper and the small town of Necedah, Wisconsin, in a frenzy.

The unusual incident occurred after a group of stray dogs startled the 16-month-old Chesney, prompting his daring leap from Sunshine Farm. His keeper, Debbie Marland, and a team of friends quickly set out to find him, covering significant ground in search efforts.

Using heat-seeking drones, the search team was able to track Chesney's movements effectively. Marland reported walking an astonishing 37,000 steps daily in her quest to locate him.

Chesney and his companion, Kenny, are part of a diverse group of animals at Sunshine Farm, which is home to various creatures, including horses, sheep, and even a Bactrian camel. After his escape, Chesney remained within a three-mile radius of the farm, but his elusive nature made tracking him a challenge.

Colton Johnson, a drone operator, utilized his skills to help find the runaway kangaroo. He described the sighting of Chesney on drone footage as resembling a dinosaur due to his unique hopping motion.

Despite several sightings, Chesney proved difficult to catch, even evading capture by jumping into a cold river. After a challenging Friday with no sightings, the search team finally spotted him resting under a tree that evening.

On Saturday morning, Marland returned to the area with Chesney's favorite treats and familiar scents, hoping to coax him out. Eventually, with a gentle approach, searchers successfully calmed Chesney and brought him back home.

The community rallied together during the search, showcasing their support and concern for the kangaroo. Following his return, plans emerged to publish a children's book about Chesney's adventure to help cover the costs incurred during the search.

Now back at Sunshine Farm, Chesney is healthy but will undergo a vet check-up soon. To prevent future escapes, Marland intends to reinforce the enclosure with a new mesh top.
