Colleges in Leh Reopen After Two Weeks of Closure
Colleges in Leh district reopened on Wednesday following a two-week closure due to unrest that began on September 24, officials reported.
Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor, Kavinder Gupta, led a security review meeting and ordered the lifting of additional restrictions to restore normalcy in the region.
All colleges resumed operations on Wednesday morning after being closed due to widespread violence during protests advocating for statehood and Sixth Schedule protections for Ladakh. The unrest resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries.
Earlier, schools for grades up to eight reopened on October 3, followed by those up to grade 12 as the situation improved.
However, mobile internet services remain suspended but are expected to be restored shortly, according to officials.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Act, which restrict assembly of five or more individuals, will likely remain in place for now.
During the review meeting, LG Gupta received updates on the phased reopening of schools, colleges, and markets across Ladakh. He expressed satisfaction with the gradual return to normal, acknowledging the resilience and cooperation of Ladakh's residents in maintaining peace.
Gupta emphasized that the reopening of educational institutions and markets reflects public trust in the administration's efforts to restore normal life. He directed authorities to continue lifting restrictions gradually and facilitate the resumption of all normal activities.
He urged residents, especially young people, to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could disrupt communal harmony, stressing that the progress of Ladakh hinges on peace and stability.
Reiterating the administration's commitment to public welfare, Gupta assured that measures are in place to address grievances and enhance local governance while accelerating development projects.
He concluded by affirming the administration's vision for Ladakh as a model of peace, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
