Delhi Celebrates Diwali with Green Crackers: Mixed Reactions Emerge
Diwali cheer is back for Delhiites who have missed the excitement of bursting crackers during the festival, following a complete ban imposed in October 2024.
After a plea from the Delhi Government, the Supreme Court has lifted the ban on green crackers, allowing their sale and use from October 18 to 21, between 6 AM-7 AM and 8 PM-10 PM.
Cracker Code Conditions:
- Green crackers can only be used during specified times.
- Sale is allowed only at locations approved by the district collector; unauthorized crackers will be confiscated.
- Green crackers must have QR codes for verification by the National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).
- Crackers sourced from outside the NCR cannot be sold in Delhi.
- Air and water quality will be monitored from October 12 to 21.
Chief Justice of India emphasized the importance of a balanced approach, allowing moderation in celebrations without compromising environmental integrity. He noted that illegal firecrackers pose greater risks than certified green ones.
Supporters like Sonal Mansingh, a renowned Bharatanatyam and Odissi dancer, celebrated the court's decision, stating that Diwali is a vital festival that should not be overshadowed by bans.
Conversely, others, like singer-actor Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, expressed concerns that even green crackers could contribute to pollution and detract from the festival's sacred essence.
As Delhi gears up for Diwali, the reactions to green crackers highlight a broader conversation about balancing tradition with environmental responsibility.
