Dutch Dickens Festival: A Magical Christmas Celebration
The Dutch Dickens Festival brings the charm of Victorian England to life, capturing the essence of Christmas cheer in the heart of Deventer.
Festival-goers were treated to a delightful scene as a gentleman clad in a top hat and cape greeted them with a hearty "Merry Christmas!" This vibrant event, which has been a tradition since December 1991, celebrates the works of Charles Dickens, featuring characters from his beloved stories roaming the streets.
Each year, Deventer transforms into a Dickensian wonderland, with over 395 characters, including the famous Oliver Twist, delighting attendees. The festival's origin can be traced back to Emmy Strik, a passionate store owner whose love for Dickens inspired her to create this unique celebration. Her daughter, Liesbeth Velders-Strik, now carries on the family tradition, ensuring the festival remains a treasured event.
As visitors stroll through the festive atmosphere, they are serenaded by carolers singing classic Christmas tunes. The festival is not just about the characters; it also features an array of costumes that evoke the spirit of Dickens' time, with careful attention paid to safety amidst the nostalgic ambiance.
Amidst the celebrations, attendees like Damien van den Berg, a 20-year-old from New Zealand, expressed their surprise at finding such a unique Christmas experience in the Netherlands. "I've never really had a Christmas like this," he remarked, highlighting the festival's ability to create memorable moments.
With nearly 50,000 visitors expected to brave the crowds and long wait times, the Dutch Dickens Festival has become a significant part of Deventer's cultural fabric, offering a whimsical escape into the world of Dickens during the holiday season.
