Eid-ul-Fitr 2026: Moon Sighting Dates Across the Globe

Eid-ul-Fitr 2026 Moon Sighting: Muslims around the world look forward to the sighting of the Shawwal crescent, which marks the beginning of Eid ul-Fitr. This year, the festival brings joy and community spirit after a month of fasting during Ramadan.

March 18, 2026, is set to be the 29th day of Ramadan. The Saudi Supreme Court will call on local communities to observe the crescent moon. In India, Eid is likely to be celebrated on either March 20 or 21, depending on visibility.

Eid, known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” occurs on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic lunar calendar. The sighting of the crescent moon is crucial, as each month in the Islamic calendar starts with it.

Saudi Arabia's Eid al-Fitr 2026

The Saudi Supreme Court has confirmed that the Shawwal crescent moon will be sought on March 18, following traditional practices. Observations will occur at locations like Sudair and Tumair, assisted by astronomers from Al Maj’mah University. The outcome will determine whether Eid will be celebrated on March 19 or 20.

Eid al-Fitr 2026 in India

In India, Ramadan commenced on February 18, making Eid celebrations likely on March 20 or 21. Local moon-sighting committees will confirm the date based on visibility after Maghrib prayers on March 19. If the moon is not sighted, Ramadan will conclude with 30 days, pushing Eid to March 21.

Countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India typically follow local moon sightings instead of relying solely on Saudi Arabia’s declarations.

Eid Celebrations in Qatar and the UAE

Qatar has announced holidays from March 17 to March 23 for Eid. Astronomical calculations suggest that Shawwal may begin on March 20, but the crescent moon will not be visible on the evening of March 18.

In the UAE, Eid Al-Fitr prayer timings will be officially announced across all emirates, expected for March 19 or 20, depending on the moon sighting.

Eid 2026 in Turkey and Singapore

Turkey and Singapore, which rely on astronomical calculations, have set their Eid dates for March 20 and 21, respectively. This method differs from moon sighting practices, highlighting the diversity in celebrating this festive occasion.

Australia's Eid Announcement

On March 12, the Australian Fatwa Council confirmed that Ramadan will end on March 19, making March 20 the first day of Eid Al Fitr.

As the Shawwal crescent is observed across various regions, many countries will confirm their Eid dates based on local sightings or astronomical calculations.

As the festival approaches, communities will gather in anticipation, marking the end of Ramadan with joy and celebration.
