Essential Lab Tests to Assess Your Cardiovascular Disease Risk

Many individuals rely on routine blood work to evaluate their heart health, believing that standard cholesterol tests provide a comprehensive picture. However, these panels can overlook critical markers that contribute to cardiovascular risk. Dr. Jeremy London, a seasoned cardiothoracic surgeon, emphasizes the importance of additional lab tests that can reveal hidden risks associated with heart disease.

Dr. London suggests that three specific tests should be included in your health check-ups:

Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)

This test measures the number of atherogenic particles in the bloodstream, offering a more precise assessment of cardiovascular risk than standard tests, which typically only measure HDL, LDL, and triglycerides. According to Dr. London, "ApoB gives you a total particle count of the atherogenic or dangerous cholesterol. These particles can penetrate vessel walls and lead to blockages."

Lipoprotein(a)

This cholesterol particle carries a unique protein tail and acts as a genetic marker for cardiovascular disease risk. Dr. London notes, "LP(a) is a cholesterol molecule with a tail, indicating genetic predisposition to increased cardiovascular risk. About 1 in 5 people have elevated Lp(a), yet most are never tested."

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)

This marker indicates the overall level of inflammation in the body, which is a significant contributor to chronic conditions, including cardiovascular diseases. Dr. London explains, "Hs-CRP reflects your full body inflammation, and inflammation is a known driver of many chronic diseases, including heart disease."

Incorporating these tests into your routine health evaluations can provide a clearer understanding of your cardiovascular health and help identify potential risks early on.
