Headmaster Suspended for Negligence and Financial Misconduct in Odisha School
In a recent development, the headmaster of a government-run upper primary school in Odisha's Ganjam district has been suspended due to negligence and alleged financial misconduct.
The district administration took action on Friday against the headmaster of Upper Primary School, Landajuali, following concerns over financial irregularities and a lack of proper maintenance of attendance records.
A show-cause notice was issued to headmaster Suman Bartiya on March 30, requiring a response within three days. However, he failed to provide a satisfactory reply, leading to his suspension, according to Munrani Mohanty, the block education officer for Aska.
During an inspection on March 23, officials discovered that the attendance register had not been maintained for the entire school year of 2025-26. The absence of proper records has implications for the school's mid-day meal scheme, which relies on accurate student attendance for rice allocation.
The school serves approximately 350 students from Shishu Vatika to Class 8. The inspection also revealed discrepancies in school funds and a shortage of at least 20 bags of rice meant for the mid-day meals.
Additionally, the salaries of six teachers have been withheld due to their failure to notify higher authorities about the maintenance issues. The center resource cluster coordinator, responsible for verifying school documents, has also faced salary retention for not fulfilling his duties.
This incident highlights the need for accountability and proper management in educational institutions to ensure that students receive the services they deserve.
