How Grok AI Saved a Man’s Life from a Misdiagnosed Ruptured Appendix
A 49-year-old man is crediting the AI chatbot Grok for saving his life after it correctly identified his severe abdominal pain as a near-ruptured appendix. This diagnosis came after an ER doctor had initially dismissed his symptoms as simple acid reflux.
The Reddit user, known as Tykjen, shared his experience, stating that he endured nearly 24 hours of intense 'razor-blade-level' pain. Despite the discomfort, he had no dramatic symptoms such as fever or bleeding.
After a visit to the ER where a doctor pressed on his abdomen and deemed it soft, Tykjen was sent home with acid blockers. However, the pain persisted at an 8 out of 10 level, prompting him to consult Grok. The AI suggested that he might have a perforated ulcer or atypical appendicitis and advised him to return to the ER for a CT scan.
On his second visit, armed with Grok's recommendations, Tykjen insisted on a CT scan. The results confirmed Grok's suspicion: his appendix was severely inflamed and close to rupturing, necessitating a six-hour laparoscopic surgery.
Post-surgery, he expressed relief, stating, 'Pain is 100 percent gone. I'm alive and healed because an AI recognized the pattern when the first exam missed it.'
Tykjen urged others experiencing similar symptoms to be proactive, saying, 'If you’re reading this while curled up in pain, please don’t wait.'
