Innovative Kidney Transplant Saves Gorakhpur Man with Rare Blood Disorder
In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals successfully performed a high-risk kidney transplant on a 36-year-old man from Gorakhpur, previously deemed too risky for the procedure due to a rare genetic blood disorder.
The patient had been suffering from a severe genetic condition that led to end-stage kidney disease, leaving him reliant on life support with limited treatment options. Dr. Jayant Hota, a senior consultant in nephrology, noted that the patient’s health had rapidly declined months before reaching the hospital.
Upon admission, the patient exhibited symptoms like fever and reduced urine output. Investigations revealed significant renal dysfunction and thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), a condition affecting small blood vessels and potentially leading to kidney failure. Despite multiple treatments at another facility, his kidney function did not improve, prompting advanced testing that revealed a severe enzyme deficiency.
The patient had critically low levels of the enzyme ADAMTS-13, along with genetic deletions related to complement factor genes, which complicated his condition further. According to Dr. Hota, the combination of these factors made a transplant significantly risky, as the underlying disorder often attacks transplanted organs.
After thorough evaluation and discussions with the patient’s family, the medical team devised a tailored treatment plan for the transplant. They deviated from standard immunosuppressive protocols to reduce the chances of complications, using rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin and fresh frozen plasma instead of traditional medications.
The elder brother of the patient volunteered as the kidney donor. Following a carefully executed surgery, the patient’s recovery exceeded expectations, resulting in normal serum creatinine levels—an indicator of successful kidney function.
Dr. Hota emphasized that this successful case sets a new benchmark for patients with rare genetic profiles. He highlighted the potential for kidney transplantation in patients with complex genetic conditions, showcasing how detailed pre-transplant diagnostic work and modified treatment protocols can yield positive outcomes.
