Jadavpur University Halts Admission of Diploma Students to 2nd Year BTech Courses
Jadavpur University has announced that it will not be admitting engineering diploma students directly into the second year of BTech courses for this academic session. This decision comes as a result of delays in the Joint Entrance Lateral Entry Test (JELET) conducted by the WBJEE Board.
JELET is essential for admission into the second year of four-year bachelor's programs in engineering, technology, and pharmacy. Typically, students who have completed a BSc or hold an engineering diploma can qualify for admission through this test.
However, the JELET was not conducted in its scheduled month of October, leaving many students in uncertainty. A senior official from JU stated that without the timely completion of this test, it is impossible to admit diploma students this year.
"With classes for the four-year BTech program already underway, we cannot accommodate diploma students qualifying JELET this time," the official explained. The university is also facing pressure as it cannot postpone second-year BTech exams for students who were admitted through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE), which is set to take place next week.
Additionally, the commencement of first-year classes has already been delayed due to issues related to the OBC quota. If the admission of second-year students is further postponed, it could jeopardize the entire academic calendar.
The results for the WBJEE were released in August, three months later than originally scheduled, due to the aforementioned impasse regarding OBC reservations.
