Jasmine Sandlas: Empowering Women through Music and Control
Popular Punjabi singer-songwriter Jasmine Sandlas has been navigating the music industry for over a decade. With her latest projects, including the Bollywood track Poison Baby in Thamma, and a collaboration on the title track for the upcoming film Dhurandhar, her music is always intentional. "Every song I create has to have a purpose behind it — whether it makes people dance, heal, or feel powerful," she emphasizes.
At 40, Jasmine recognizes the scrutiny surrounding the portrayal of women in the Punjabi music scene. She believes empowerment comes from agency. "A woman can be sexy and powerful as long as she’s in control. If she’s dancing to her own rhythm and expressing herself freely, that’s empowerment — not objectification," she states. Her recent item number in Thamma exemplifies this notion of choice and self-expression.
Her work in Dhurandhar blends traditional Punjabi sounds with modern energy, showcasing her belief that women can express themselves in multifaceted ways. "The director wanted to honor the classic while introducing a fresh sound. I wrote in Hindi and Punjabi, adjusting until the music felt right," she explains. Jasmine describes her collaboration with Hanumankind as an unexpected yet extraordinary experience.
This phase marks a significant transformation in Jasmine's career. After writing over 130 songs and releasing four albums, she reflects on her past tendency to overthink. "Now, I'm focused on intuition, trying new things, and taking creative risks," she shares.
With more than ten million monthly listeners on streaming platforms, Jasmine feels a strong responsibility toward her female audience. "My songs resonate deeply with women, who tell me how important it is to hear music that empowers them — and that keeps me grounded," she concludes.
