Laura Dave Unveils Sequel to ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’
Fans of “The Last Thing He Told Me” can rejoice, as Laura Dave has released a sequel titled “The First Time I Saw Him.”
This new installment continues the story of Hannah Hall and Owen, who were introduced in the first book. The original narrative captivated readers, leading to a successful TV adaptation starring Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice, set to premiere its second season on Apple TV next month.
Dave initially envisioned her first book as a standalone, but the overwhelming interest from readers prompted her to explore the characters’ futures. She stated, “After the book came out, I started getting so many questions, people saying, ‘Well, what happens next?’”
The story follows Hannah, who is navigating her new marriage with Owen and the challenges posed by his teenage daughter, Bailey. The plot thickens when Owen mysteriously disappears, leaving Hannah to protect Bailey and uncover the truth.
“The Last Thing He Told Me” enjoyed significant acclaim, spending 65 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list and being selected by Reese Witherspoon for her book club.
In this sequel, Dave delves deeper into the characters' pasts while exploring themes of forgiveness and second chances. “If the first book asks what we’re willing to do for those we love, the second asks what we’re willing to do to be forgiven,” she remarked.
In her creative process, Dave collaborates closely with her husband, Oscar-winning screenwriter Josh Singer. She appreciates their differing writing styles and values their discussions on story and character development.
This engaging sequel promises to keep readers on the edge of their seats while offering a heartfelt exploration of love and redemption.
