Mariah Carey’s Hidden Grunge Album Shines at MusiCares Tribute

LOS ANGELES — Mariah Carey, known for her blend of pop, R&B, gospel, and hip-hop, surprised fans by referencing her little-known grunge album during a recent tribute at the MusiCares event.

During the event, the Foo Fighters performed “Someone's Ugly Daughter,” featuring Taylor Momsen on lead vocals. Carey was seen clapping along from her front-row seat.

The evening celebrated Carey’s musical contributions and philanthropic efforts, honoring her as MusiCares Person of the Year just days before the Grammy Awards. This accolade is awarded by MusiCares, a charity dedicated to supporting musicians in need.

“She is one of one,” said longtime collaborator Babyface, praising Carey as a dream for songwriters and producers.

In 1995, Carey secretly recorded the grunge album “Someone’s Ugly Daughter” with her friend Clarissa Dane under the pseudonym Chick. This revelation came to light in her 2020 memoir, where she shared her role as a background vocalist while Dane took the lead.

Of all the performances, it was the Foo Fighters' nostalgic tribute that seemed to resonate most with Carey.

Although Stevie Wonder did not perform, he took the opportunity to express his admiration for Carey, stating, “The greatest thing about you and I is we have respect and love for each other.”

Other notable performances included Teddy Swims tackling “Without You,” and British girl group Flo harmonizing on “Dream Lover.” Jennifer Hudson opened with “I Don't Wanna Cry,” leading into “Vision of Love.”

Surprise guest Busta Rhymes performed alongside Chanté Moore and Spliff Star on “I Know What You Want,” while John Legend played “Hero.” Adam Lambert, in a lavender jacket, performed “Can't Let Go,” a nod to Carey’s celebrated sixth studio album “Butterfly,” released in 1997.

Carey, adorned in diamonds, sang along more from her table than on stage. The event concluded with a rendition of “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” led by Jon Batiste, with Carey joining in for a brief moment.

As she expressed her gratitude for the honor, she reflected on her journey, stating, “It’s overwhelming in the best possible way.” With the Grammy Awards approaching, Carey is set to perform at the Milan Cortina Olympics opening ceremony, followed by a concert in Abu Dhabi.

“Ah, tonight has been sublime,” she remarked. “When I was a little girl scribbling lyrics, I could only dream of someone hearing those words and relating to them.”
