Mizoram Revolutionizes Education with Experience-Based Curriculum

Aizawl - The Mizoram government is set to implement an experience-based curriculum in schools, marking a significant shift from traditional rote learning methods.

This initiative aims to modernize the educational approach, with standardized annual exams introduced for classes 5 and 8, ensuring uniformity in student assessments.

According to officials, this reform aligns with the National Curriculum Framework 2023 and the National Education Policy 2020, focusing on enhancing critical thinking and experiential learning.

Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Caroline Zoramthangi, announced that new textbooks will be launched for classes 1, 2, 3, and 6 in the 2026-27 academic session, followed by classes 4, 5, 7, and 8 in the subsequent year.

The new curriculum emphasizes practical learning methods such as illustrations, drama, and field trips over rote memorization, fostering critical thinking and direct experiences rather than abstract theories.

Caroline noted that subjects like Mathematics and Science will now relate more closely to students' everyday lives, creating a more engaging and interactive classroom environment.

In addition to the curriculum changes, competency-based uniform question papers will be administered across 770 state-run and aided schools for classes 5 and 8, allowing for standardized assessment.

The education minister is committed to improving educational quality through these reforms, which include a shift from traditional merit-based results in classes 10 and 12 to a more competency-focused evaluation.

This innovative approach is expected to enhance student performance in national-level competitive exams while promoting a more comprehensive educational experience.
