Mizoram’s Tourism Growth: Collaboration with Church Leaders
Aizawl – In response to the growing number of tourists, Mizoram's Tourism Department, led by Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, recently met with representatives from the state's largest denomination, the Presbyterian Church. The discussion focused on developing strategies to manage the increasing tourist influx effectively.
The meeting emphasized the importance of balancing economic growth with the preservation of Mizoram's unique social fabric. Hmar presented a roadmap for 'responsible tourism' as the state anticipates another record-breaking year.
In 2025, Mizoram welcomed over 800,000 visitors, a number that is expected to rise in 2026. Hmar pointed out that addressing this growth requires not only infrastructure enhancements but also a thoughtful cultural strategy.
He stressed the necessity of educating the public about hosting diverse groups to mitigate potential negative influences. 'While growth is a blessing, we must be vigilant. It is essential to sensitize visitors about local etiquette and community norms,' he stated.
The church representatives acknowledged the progress made in the tourism sector and emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan that allows visitors to enjoy their stay while respecting local traditions.
The Synod leaders highlighted that the state's beauty and its safe, disciplined environment are significant contributions of the Christian faith, which should be prominently showcased.
Mizoram’s tourism policy is centered around the CAN framework—Culture, Adventure, and Nature. The focus of the meeting was on 'Cultural Tourism,' particularly in showcasing Mizo identity and its rich Christian heritage.
Both parties agreed on the importance of providing tourists with written materials that convey essential information to ensure respect for local customs during their stay.
Church leaders proposed utilizing peak seasons, especially Christmas, not only for festivities but also as a chance for spiritual outreach.
Affirming the Presbyterian Church’s support for tourism growth, the Synod leaders encouraged the government to communicate their expectations for church involvement openly.
This meeting follows a prior discussion on January 20 with the Council of Churches in Mizoram. Hmar indicated that the government plans to maintain these consultations with various denominations and NGOs to foster a holistic approach to the state's development.
