Mumbai Doctor Warns: Best Times to Run Amid High Air Pollution

Dr. Ramkishan Nag, a consultant at HCG Cancer Centre in Borivali, has raised alarm over the dangers of exercising outdoors in polluted air. He warns that running in such conditions can be as harmful as smoking cigarettes.

Many fitness enthusiasts often prefer early morning runs, thinking they are healthier. However, this is a hazardous time due to stagnant air and elevated pollution levels.

Early Winter Mornings: The Most Hazardous Time

According to Dr. Nag, the early winter mornings are particularly risky. During these times, smog and vehicle emissions combine with cold, still air, trapping pollutants close to the ground. This can result in an Air Quality Index (AQI) ranging between 200 and 400, which is alarmingly common in many Indian cities.

He explains, “Even a 30-minute run outdoors can expose your lungs to as much toxic air as smoking several cigarettes.”

Effects of Running in Bad Air

Engaging in aerobic exercises like running increases the body’s oxygen demand. Consequently, breathing becomes faster and deeper, drawing in more pollutants. Dr. Nag states that exercising in polluted air can lead to serious health issues over time, including bronchospasm and reduced lung capacity.

Protecting Yourself While Running

To mitigate risks, Dr. Nag advises avoiding intense outdoor workouts when the AQI exceeds 200. Instead, consider indoor alternatives such as treadmills or home exercises. If outdoor running is unavoidable, wearing a certified N95 mask and choosing less trafficked, greener areas can help.

Utilizing Technology for Safety

Technology can play a crucial role in ensuring safety. AQI apps can provide real-time updates, helping runners to identify safer times for outdoor workouts, typically late mornings or early evenings when pollution levels are lower.

Dr. Nag emphasizes the importance of urban planners and health experts working together to create long-term solutions such as more green spaces and cleaner public transport. He concludes, “Running can be an effective way to maintain fitness, but it should not come at the expense of lung health. With proper planning, fitness enthusiasts can protect their health even in polluted urban environments.”
