Rajpal Yadav Denied Relief by Delhi HC: Key Details
Actor Rajpal Yadav is currently serving a six-month sentence in a cheque-bounce case that dates back a decade. The Delhi High Court recently denied his request for immediate relief, highlighting his repeated failures to meet financial obligations.
A single-judge bench, presided over by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, pointed out that Yadav had acknowledged his debt to Murali Projects Pvt Ltd but failed to follow through on repayment promises. His lawyer argued for a suspension of the sentence due to a family wedding, but the court was not persuaded.
The judge remarked, “You have appeared in this Court 25 to 30 times, assisted by senior counsel, and yet failed to honor your commitments.” The court's next hearing is scheduled for Monday.
Background of the Case
The case began in 2010 when Yadav borrowed ₹5 crore for his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata, which ended up being a commercial failure. His financial issues escalated, leading to a magisterial court convicting him in 2018 for cheque dishonor under the Negotiable Instruments Act, resulting in a six-month prison sentence upheld by a sessions court in 2019. The amount owed has since ballooned to nearly ₹9 crore.
Before surrendering to Tihar Jail, an emotional Yadav expressed to the court, “I don't have money. I see no way out… I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”
Support from Bollywood
After his surrender, several Bollywood figures, including Sonu Sood, Mika Singh, and KRK, offered financial support. Notable celebrities such as Salman Khan and Varun Dhawan also reached out privately to show their solidarity.
Sonu Sood shared on social media, “Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has contributed significantly to our industry… We must remind him he’s not alone during this tough phase.”
Looking Ahead
Yadav's legal team claims that approximately ₹2 crore remains unpaid but will be settled soon. The Delhi High Court will revisit the case on Monday to determine if any interim relief can be granted while the actor serves his sentence.
