Recognizing Seizures: Essential Steps to Help Someone in Need

Witnessing someone suddenly collapse and start shaking can be terrifying. However, knowing how to respond can save a life.

Dr. Kunal Sood, an anesthesiologist, explains that seizures are more common than many realize, occurring due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. This disruption can lead to sudden changes in awareness, movement, or behavior.

Seizure symptoms can manifest suddenly, often as full-body shaking, twitching, staring spells, or brief loss of consciousness.

How to Respond During a Seizure

The primary goal when someone is having a seizure is to ensure their safety. Here are essential steps to follow:

  • Stay with the person and ensure their safety.
  • Clear any nearby objects that could cause injury.
  • Gently turn them onto their side to keep the airway clear.
  • Place something soft under their head and loosen any tight clothing around the neck.
  • Time the duration of the seizure.

Timing is crucial, as it helps medical professionals assess the situation. Most seizures last only a minute or two; however, if it lasts longer than five minutes or if multiple seizures occur, call emergency services immediately.

Dr. Sood also notes that individuals with known seizure disorders may have prescribed rescue medications, which should only be administered if the person has been specifically instructed on how to use them.
