Restoration of Empress Eugénie’s Crown: A Look at the Price and Process

Empress Eugénie's crown, a significant artifact from the 19th century, is set to undergo restoration after being damaged during a daring heist at the Louvre in October 2025. Remarkably, most of the original components of the crown have survived, prompting experts to estimate the restoration cost at around 40,000 euros.

The crown was one of nine pieces stolen during the audacious robbery, yet it was left behind by the thieves. Initially found crushed on the floor, a fragment featuring a diamond and emerald was discovered nearby, leading Louvre specialists to conclude that a full restoration is feasible.

The restoration will be overseen by an advisory committee, chaired by Laurence des Cars, the President-Director of the Louvre. According to Olivier Gabet, the museum’s decorative arts director, while the exact cost remains uncertain, much of the expense will stem from the labor-intensive repair process.

During the heist, four of the crown's decorative palms were detached, and approximately ten of the 1,354 diamonds are currently missing. Gabet noted that a golden eagle from the crown is likely still among the other stolen pieces.

This crown, commissioned by Napoleon III for the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris, is part of a small collection of French crown jewels. Designed by the imperial jeweller Alexandre Gabriel Lemonnier, it features a stunning array of 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds.

After the fall of the Empire, the crown was returned to Eugénie in 1875 and later became part of the Louvre's collection in 1988. Although it was never used in a coronation, it remains one of only three sovereign crowns preserved in France.
