Rising Vitamin Deficiencies in India: A Dental Surgeon’s Warning
Vitamin deficiencies are on the rise in India, leading to numerous health issues, particularly in oral health. Dr. Vikas Sethi, a dental surgeon at Sir Gangaram Hospital, warns that these deficiencies are spreading rapidly, yet awareness remains low among the population.
Many individuals are unaware of the health impacts caused by deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, which can manifest as fatigue, weakened immunity, and oral problems.
Dr. Sethi highlights the following common vitamin deficiencies in India:
- Vitamin B12: Often low in vegetarian diets and prevalent among those with anemia.
- Vitamin D: Insufficient sun exposure and low intake of animal products contribute to this deficiency.
- Vitamin C: A lack of citrus fruits and vegetables results in inadequate levels.
- Vitamin B: Deficiencies can arise from malabsorption, lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol use, and aging.
- Vitamin A: Often lacking due to insufficient consumption of leafy greens.
In addition to vitamins, iron deficiency is also significant in India, often leading to anemia.
Dr. Sethi elaborates on how vitamin deficiencies can lead to oral health issues:
Effects on Gums:
Vitamin C and D are particularly crucial for gum health:
- Vitamin C deficiency: Can cause scurvy, leading to inflamed gums and potential tooth loss if untreated.
- Vitamin D deficiency: Essential for calcium absorption; its absence can result in periodontosis and tooth loss.
To combat these deficiencies, Dr. Sethi recommends regular dental check-ups every six months to monitor oral health, as early signs of health issues often appear in the mouth.
Maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential vitamins, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol, and scheduling routine dental cleanings can help prevent vitamin deficiencies and promote better oral health.
