Tamil Nadu Theatres Suffer ₹100 Crore Loss from Delay of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan

The impending release of actor-politician Vijay's final film, Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, has been indefinitely postponed due to a censor delay from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This delay, coupled with ongoing legal battles, has left the film in limbo.

According to trade analysts, Tamil Nadu theatres are projected to incur losses exceeding 100 crore as a result of this postponement. Jana Nayagan was anticipated to be a blockbuster, especially since it was scheduled for release on January 9, coinciding with the festive Pongal season when families flock to cinemas.

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala noted that the film could have grossed between 150-200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone, especially with the anticipated competition from Sivakarthikeyan's film, Parasakthi, which has also experienced a delayed release.

With a dry spell in box office revenue during late 2025, the delay of Jana Nayagan has exacerbated the plight of theatre owners. The first quarter of 2026 is now projected to be particularly challenging for Tamil cinema, with many films facing scheduling conflicts.

As the Madras High Court continues to deliberate on the case, audiences hoping for a February release may have to wait longer. Even if the film is eventually cleared for release, the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections could further complicate the cinema landscape, diminishing audience turnout.

Jana Nayagan features a star-studded cast, including Vijay, Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol, marking a significant moment in Vijay's career as he transitions into politics.
