Tragic Drowning: Rahul Arunoday Banerjee’s Heroic Attempt to Save Co-Star

Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee tragically lost his life on March 29 while attempting to save a female co-actor during a filming incident at Talsari Beach.

The actors were shooting a scene in shallow water when the co-star slipped and fell into a depression on the uneven seabed. Eyewitnesses reported that Rahul immediately jumped in to rescue her.

Local boatman Tapan Gangai stated, “Rahulji was still standing when madam slipped and fell. She was wearing a sari and got trapped in the water.” Another boatman, Pulin, recalled the moments after Rahul was pulled from the water, indicating he was alive initially but later succumbed to his injuries.

Reports indicate that the duo had been filming on a speedboat when strong waves caused them to fall into the sea. While the co-star was swiftly rescued, it took nearly an hour for locals and crew to locate Rahul.

At the time of the incident, Rahul was filming for the TV serial "Bhole Baba Par Karega." Co-actor Bhaskar Banerjee mentioned that they were shooting a routine honeymoon scene in ankle-deep water.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Rahul inhaled a significant amount of sand and saline water, contributing to his death. Investigators noted that the production team had not obtained the necessary permissions, which could have ensured safety measures such as lifeguards and rescue boats.

Despite the efforts of boatmen and crew members to retrieve him, the delay proved fatal. Rahul's body was taken to his home in Bijoygarh, where family and friends paid their respects. His funeral took place at the Keoratala Crematorium.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death, and a joint investigation is underway involving authorities from Odisha and West Bengal, as inconsistencies in crew statements are being examined.

Rahul is survived by his wife, actor Priyanka Sarkar, and their son, Shahaj Banerjee. The couple had a tumultuous relationship, having separated in 2017 but reconciling in 2023. His untimely passing has left a profound impact on his family, colleagues, and fans, who are mourning his loss.
