Transforming Teacher Training: NISHTHA Modules for AI Curriculum

Teacher training for the upcoming Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) curriculum, set to be integrated from Grade 3, will utilize NISHTHA modules along with various national-level programs, including video-based learning resources.

The National Initiative for School Heads' and Teachers' Holistic Advancement (NISHTHA) aims to elevate the quality of school education through comprehensive teacher training.

In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE) 2023, the Ministry of Education has confirmed that AI and CT will become part of the national curriculum starting from the 2026-27 academic year.

The Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL) is dedicated to promoting AI and CT as essential elements of a future-ready education system.

The department is collaborating with institutions such as CBSE, NCERT, KVS, and NVS to craft a meaningful and inclusive curriculum through a consultative approach under NCF SE 2023.

Key points from a stakeholder consultation on October 29 included the integration of AICT curriculum, allocation of instructional time, and resource development as outlined in NCF SE.

The official statement noted the development of resource materials, handbooks, and digital content by December 2025, in addition to grade-specific teacher training through NISHTHA.

The AICT initiative aims to enhance learning, thinking, and teaching, ultimately advancing the concept of “AI for Public Good.” This initiative represents a critical step towards the ethical application of AI, beginning its integration at the foundational level in Grade 3.

A stakeholder consultation brought together expert groups, including CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS, and external specialists. The CBSE has established an expert committee, chaired by Prof Karthik Raman from IIT Madras, to develop the AI & CT curriculum.

During the consultation, Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of DoSeL, emphasized the need to consider AI education as a universal skill, connecting it to The World Around Us (TWAU). He highlighted the importance of creating a broad-based, inclusive curriculum aligned with NCF SE 2023, stressing that the unique potential of every child is a priority.

Kumar also noted that teacher training and learning materials, including NISHTHA modules and video resources, will be fundamental to implementing the curriculum effectively. Collaboration between NCERT and CBSE will ensure quality and seamless integration of the curriculum.

Praising the value of an international perspective, Kumar asserted that the curriculum should be tailored to meet Indian needs.

Prachi Pandey, Joint Secretary (I&T), concluded the discussion by emphasizing the importance of adhering to the established timelines for the curriculum's development and rollout.
