University of Sheffield Introduces MSc in Human Bioarchaeology and Osteology for 2026

The University of Sheffield is excited to announce its new MSc in Human Bioarchaeology and Osteology, set to launch in September 2026.

This innovative postgraduate program allows students to delve into the study of ancient and historical human populations through scientific analysis of skeletal remains.

Designed for graduates aspiring to careers in bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, human osteology, and archaeological science, this specialized master's offers advanced training in bone studies, human anatomy, and laboratory techniques. It is particularly suited for those with an undergraduate background in relevant fields.

Hands-On Training with Real Specimens

The MSc emphasizes practical learning, equipping students with a comprehensive array of scientific methods essential for bioarchaeological research. Training includes:

  • Radiography
  • Histological and microscopic analysis
  • Chemical and isotopic techniques
  • Ancient DNA research
  • Lipid analysis
  • Proteomics

Students will also gain specialized skills in functional anatomy, learning to identify human bones, recognize variations by sex and age, and understand how diseases and injuries affect the skeleton. The curriculum includes both quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Access to Sheffield's extensive collection of archaeological specimens will help students confidently identify and interpret skeletal remains. They will also work in the anatomy laboratory, which features real human plastinates and full-size digital Anatomage tables for a detailed exploration of human anatomy.

Field Visits, Lectures, and Research

Additional learning opportunities will involve field trips to archaeological sites and museums, as well as lectures covering the history and theory of bioarchaeology and osteology. Students will receive training in science communication, including visual and audio presentation skills for research.

A significant component of the degree is a three-month independent research project, allowing students to contribute to ongoing archaeological research.

Eligibility, Fees, and Scholarships

Applicants should hold a 3 or 4-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60% in a relevant subject, such as Archaeology, Biology, Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Genetics, Medicine, or Zoology.

The overseas fee for 2026 is set at £30,625. International students can benefit from a £3,000 automatic scholarship through the International Postgraduate Scholarship 2026 if they accept their offer before July 7, 2026, at 4 PM (UK time), with no separate application required.

For further details, prospective students are encouraged to check the University of Sheffield’s official website.
