Kerala Government’s Stance Against Communalization in Schools

The Kerala government has strongly condemned reports of private school managements imposing restrictions on Christmas celebrations and refunding money collected from students for the festivities.

Officials have warned that schools will not be allowed to transform into 'communal laboratories'. Such actions are unprecedented in Kerala, a state known for its democratic values and secular traditions.

State General Education Minister V. Sivankutty stated, "No one will be permitted to introduce divisive ideologies based on religion in Kerala's educational institutions." He emphasized that schools are environments where children of all backgrounds learn and grow together.

In Kerala, festivals like Onam, Christmas, and Eid are celebrated collectively in schools, promoting mutual respect and coexistence among students. Sivankutty criticized the decision of some private schools to cancel celebrations after collecting fees, labeling it as cruel and detrimental to children's well-being.

He reiterated that all educational institutions, whether aided or unaided, are bound by the Constitution of India and must uphold the values of secularism. The minister warned of strict actions against any attempts to impose selective restrictions on celebrations of any community.

Additionally, he confirmed that an urgent inquiry would be conducted regarding complaints from parents and students about compulsory special classes being held during the Christmas vacation, stating such classes should not occur during holidays.
