KITE Enhances GCompris with Tamil and Kannada Educational Content

KITE, the technology arm of Kerala's General Education Department, has successfully integrated Tamil and Kannada content into GCompris, a prominent educational software.

This initiative significantly enhances the software, which is designed for students in Classes 1 to 4, addressing previous limitations in language support.

Previously, GCompris primarily offered support for Sanskrit and Malayalam. The addition of Tamil and Kannada marks a crucial step in expanding regional language resources.

KITE developed these localized materials based on its Kalipetti ICT textbooks, which cater to students in border areas and linguistic minority schools.

Following a visit from Timothée Giet, a co-maintainer of GCompris, KITE was encouraged to upload its localization packages to the official repository, leading to the preparation of over 1,500 translations and voice-overs in both languages.

This endeavor has received formal approval from the KDE Community, making the content accessible across various platforms, including the Google Play Store.

With GCompris offering around 200 interactive activities focused on skills such as numeracy and literacy, this integration is set to benefit children, including those with special needs.

KITE’s commitment to enhancing educational resources underscores Kerala's leadership in implementing Free Software solutions for education.
