Exploring Hong Kong’s Unique ‘Villain Hitting’ Ritual: A Symbolic Curse for Just ₹450

In a fascinating cultural twist, Hong Kong offers a unique ritual known as 'villain hitting' or da siu yan, where individuals can symbolically curse their enemies for a mere ₹450. This centuries-old tradition involves elderly women who help people release their frustrations by literally hitting bad vibes away using a slipper.

Travel blogger Akanksha Monga recently shared her experience, stating, "So I got my enemy cursed with a SHOE in Hong Kong. No, I’m serious." The process is quite engaging: participants write down their grievances, whether it be a troublesome person or bad luck, and the women performing the ritual slap the paper with a shoe while chanting spells to banish these issues.

For Monga, the focus wasn’t on revenge but rather on cleansing her energy. "Sometimes you just need to release the energy that’s been weighing you down," she expressed. This ritual, taking place under the Canal Road Flyover in Causeway Bay, attracts many locals and tourists, creating a unique atmosphere filled with incense smoke and bustling energy.

According to lifestyle blogger Karen Louie, the cost is approximately $5 USD (around ₹450), making it an accessible way to engage in this intriguing folk practice. The ceremony is typically performed during Jingzhe, which represents the 'awakening of insects' in the Chinese lunisolar calendar, marking a time of renewal and fresh beginnings.

Despite its seemingly superstitious nature, villain hitting is largely symbolic, allowing individuals to express their frustrations in a culturally significant manner. If you're ever in Hong Kong, don't miss the chance to witness or participate in this captivating ritual!
