Dr. S Sundar, an orthopaedics expert, explains how this habit affects the body. He reveals that 40%-45% of office workers experience neck pain annually due to posture-related issues caused by one-shoulder bags.


The most common complaint is musculoskeletal pain affecting the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, or tendons rather than internal organs.


Who is at Greater Risk?


Dr. Sundar notes that women who frequently carry a laptop tote on one shoulder face a higher risk of pain due to their choice of bag.


Why Does This Happen?


The uneven weight distribution is a primary culprit. Carrying a laptop bag weighing 3 kg or more on one shoulder can cause the body to tilt. This forces the neck, shoulder, and upper back muscles on that side to work harder, leading to fatigue and inflammation.


Are Tote Bags the Best Option?


Dr. Sundar warns that bags designed for one shoulder can create uneven weight distribution, increasing strain when walking long distances or standing for extended periods.


How to Prevent Discomfort


To avoid back pain, Dr. Sundar recommends switching shoulders frequently, using a two-shoulder strap backpack for long commutes, and carrying fewer items. These practices can enhance upper back and neck strength and improve posture.
