Delhi University Considers Semester Away Programme for Undergraduate Students
In a significant move to promote academic flexibility and global exposure, Delhi University is contemplating the introduction of a Semester Away Programme at foreign universities for undergraduate students.
This proposal is slated for discussion at the upcoming Academic Council meeting. While multiple exit options for undergraduates have been implemented in line with the National Education Policy 2020, the university is now looking to expand opportunities for students to study abroad.
According to Registrar Vikas Gupta, the initiative aims to provide greater flexibility. Students will have the option to fulfill their academic requirements while also engaging in internships or training at foreign institutions.
The proposal outlines that students enrolled in any university program could undertake part of their studies abroad, complying with UGC Regulations. This would allow for a semester of study either in India or at a foreign higher education institution.
The goal of this initiative is to provide a broader range of multidisciplinary approaches, research opportunities, and global connectivity.
Students enrolled from the academic year 2022-23 onwards will be eligible to participate during their third, fifth, or seventh semesters, ensuring they can complete their degrees on time.
The programme will allow students to earn between 12 to 26 credits during their semester abroad, and there may be financial assistance available for meritorious students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
