JNU Announces Major Faculty Promotions and Recruitment
New Delhi, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced the approval of 246 faculty promotions under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS), marking its largest recruitment and promotion initiative to date.
This decision comes in response to recent criticisms regarding delays in promotions and a perceived lack of transparency in recruitment processes.
During the period from February 2022 to February 2026, JNU successfully filled 219 faculty positions. The breakdown of promotions includes 75 professors, 34 associate professors, 55 assistant professors, and 82 additional assistant professors.
In terms of categories, promotions were distributed as follows: 157 from General/UR, 38 from SC, 11 from ST, 30 from OBC, 2 from EWS, and 8 from PwD categories.
Gender representation among those promoted shows 161 males and 85 females, emphasizing the university's commitment to inclusivity.
Alongside these promotions, JNU conducted over 400 recruitment interviews to address backlogs that have persisted since 2006.
From February 2022 to February 2026, the university filled 219 posts with executive council approval, which included 73 assistant professors, 110 associate professors, and 36 professors.
The recruitment category breakdown reveals that 70 positions were filled under UR, 72 under OBC, 41 under SC, 28 under ST, 6 under PwD, and 2 under EWS categories.
JNU has actively kept faculty members informed about any deficiencies in their applications that could delay their promotions.
The university's administration has highlighted the role of its first woman OBC Vice-Chancellor in promoting diversity and inclusivity within the institution.
