Top Indian Universities Shine in QS World Rankings by Subject

New Delhi, four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Birla Institute of Technology (BITS), Pilani have made it to the world's top 50 institutions for various subjects, as revealed in the latest QS World University Rankings.


Published by London-based QS Quacquarelli Symonds, this is the 16th annual edition of the rankings by subject, covering over 21,000 academic programs across 1,900 universities in more than 100 countries, spanning 55 disciplines.


This year, India boasts 27 top 50 positions across subjects, a significant increase from the 12 positions recorded in 2024.


Notably, the Indian School of Mines University in Dhanbad ranks 21st globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering. Additionally, IIM Ahmedabad also secured the 21st position in both Business and Management Studies and Marketing, marking India's first appearance in Marketing rankings.


The top Indian institutions in the rankings include IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, JNU, and BITS Pilani.


Jessica Turner, CEO of QS Quacquarelli Symonds, noted, "India's rise this year reflects not just growth in numbers, but also an increase in quality and global competitiveness. The improvement across engineering, technology, and business demonstrates a commitment to advancing research and global partnerships."


IIT Delhi stands out with six top-50 entries, leading India in four subjects, including Chemical Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and it ranks second in Computer Science at 45th.
