The government has confirmed a 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in direct recruitment to civil posts and services at the central level, as stated in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, B L Verma, informed that the Department of Personnel and Training oversees the implementation of this reservation policy.
According to the minister, this policy is based on an office memorandum dated September 8, 1993, which reserves 27% of vacancies in direct recruitment for OBCs (Socially and Educationally Backward Classes).
In addition, the government is taking steps under the PM Young Achievers' Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India (PM-YASASVI), which supports OBCs through pre-matric and post-matric scholarships, high-quality education in schools and colleges, and the construction of hostels for OBC boys and girls.
Furthermore, the "Scholarships for Higher Education for Young Achievers Scheme (SHREYAS-OBC)" includes provisions for a National Fellowship for OBCs and the Dr. Ambedkar Central Sector Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Educational Loans for overseas studies aimed at OBCs and economically backward classes (EBCs).
Verma emphasized that the ministry regularly reviews these welfare schemes for OBCs in consultation with relevant stakeholders and departments.
