India’s Inbound Student Growth: 8% Annual Increase Expected, Says QS Report

New Delhi: India's inbound student numbers are set to experience an impressive annual growth of approximately 8%, starting from an estimated base of 58,000 students in 2025. This trend positions India as one of the fastest-growing study destinations in the world, according to a recent report by QS.

The 'Global Student Flows: India' report presents an in-depth analysis of international student mobility concerning India through to 2030. Now in its eighth edition, it leverages QS's flow-mapping technology, insights from the QS International Student Survey 2025, and World University Rankings data, offering a comprehensive overview of both inbound and outbound trends.

Notably, the report highlights that India's inbound student numbers are forecasted to rise significantly, contrasting sharply with stricter visa policies and increasing costs in traditional Anglophone countries that are redirecting prospective students to more accessible alternatives.

South Asia remains pivotal in this growth, contributing nearly half of all foreign enrolments. Notably, Nepal and Bangladesh account for over 30% of incoming students, with Nepal's growth projected at around 11% annually. Conversely, Afghanistan's growth may be limited to under 1% due to visa constraints.

Furthermore, the demand from Sub-Saharan Africa is rising, with student flows expected to grow by 6% per year, driven by large youth populations and limited domestic higher education resources. Zimbabwe stands out with an anticipated growth rate of about 11%, potentially elevating its status as a major source of students in India.

However, Indian institutions face challenges to maintain this growth momentum. Despite improvements in employer reputation, academic reputation has stagnated. Moreover, a significant gap exists between employer perception and actual graduate employability, with only 42.6% of Indian graduates deemed employable according to a 2025 report.

As Indian students increasingly look toward Germany, France, and the UAE for affordable quality education, the QS report emphasizes the need for Indian universities to enhance their infrastructure and student support systems to provide an enriching experience that attracts international students.
