Anurag Kashyap Critiques Netflix’s Premium Content Strategy

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has publicly expressed his discontent with Netflix India, accusing the platform of monopolizing popular shows and creating a barrier for viewers with its premium pricing. In a recent conversation with Komal Nahta, he discussed how the streaming giant has shifted its strategy, impacting accessibility for audiences.

Kashyap pointed out that shows like Crime Patrol, The Kapil Sharma Show, and CID were previously free for viewers but are now behind a paywall. He stated, “You need a subscription to watch, and then they take these shows that were freely available. They are playing a massy game at a premium cost.”

Expressing his frustration, he remarked, “Many filmmakers have distanced themselves from Netflix because of the creative compromises demanded. It’s not just me; several have followed suit.” He added that platforms like Hotstar are more transparent in their approach, not pretending to be elite.

Previously, Kashyap collaborated with Netflix on projects like Sacred Games and anthologies Lust Stories and Ghost Stories. His latest film, Nishaanchi, is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on November 14.
