Javed Akhtar on AI: Concerns Are Overstated and Inevitable
Javed Akhtar has recently shared his thoughts on the growing concerns regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in the creative sector, labeling many of these worries as exaggerated. The veteran screenwriter and lyricist firmly believes that AI is an inevitable reality that cannot be ignored.
While many creatives have voiced their apprehensions about the role of AI in film, Akhtar argues that it is essential to recognize the contributions AI can make. At the Soundscapes of India event, he was questioned about the inclusion of AI content in the upcoming International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
He noted, “Throughout history, technological advancements like automobiles and railway engines faced resistance due to fears of their societal impact. However, science is inherently moral-neutral; it progresses regardless of public opinion. AI has already made significant strides globally, and it is here to stay.”
Akhtar emphasized the importance of harnessing AI for positive outcomes rather than resisting it. He stated, “We need to focus on how to utilize this technology to our advantage and manage its power effectively. You cannot simply wish it away.”
Reflecting on the ongoing writers' strike in Hollywood over AI and machine learning, he acknowledged that while the concerns are valid, they are somewhat overstated. “AI relies on existing data, which we provide. The sharing and utilization of this data will persist, and we must decide how much we want to contribute,” he concluded.
