Amitabh Bachchan Reflects on Govinda’s Rise to Stardom
Recently, Bollywood star Govinda was hospitalized briefly after losing consciousness due to fatigue. Fortunately, he was discharged the same day, attributing his condition to excessive exercise.
This incident has reignited discussions about Govinda's remarkable career, particularly the 1990s when he was at the pinnacle of Bollywood stardom. During this time, Amitabh Bachchan, a legendary figure in the industry, found himself overshadowed by Govinda's extraordinary popularity.
Amitabh Bachchan on Govinda's Popularity
Amitabh, who has seen both the heights and lows of his extensive career, took a break from films in the mid-1990s. It was during this hiatus that Govinda emerged as a dominant force in Bollywood.
Known for his impressive comic timing and dance skills, Govinda became a household name. Amitabh made his comeback alongside Govinda in the blockbuster Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998), but it was clear that the dynamics of stardom had shifted.
In a 2016 interview, Amitabh reflected on this change, stating, "The crowd is not as attracted to you. You could enter a restaurant and cause mayhem, but then you can enter again and nobody looks at you. So, you go through that phase."
He compared his experiences from earlier days to the present, recalling a promotional event in New York where he was met with overwhelming excitement. In contrast, during a recent promotion with Govinda, he noticed a much more subdued response.
Amitabh also shared a humorous anecdote from the filming of Hum (1991), where a child approached him for an autograph but was redirected by a friend to ask Govinda instead, highlighting the latter's enormous appeal among fans.
As Govinda continues to work in the industry, he is set to make a comeback in his upcoming film Duniyadari, announced in June 2025.
