Scarlett Johansson Leads the Exorcist Reboot: A New Era of Horror
Hollywood sensation Scarlett Johansson is set to star in the upcoming reboot of the Exorcist franchise, marking her first major venture into the horror genre. This thrilling development comes after her recent success with Jurassic World: Rebirth, which garnered nearly $869 million at the global box office.
According to reports, Johansson has been officially cast in the next installment of this iconic series, which will be penned and helmed by acclaimed director Mike Flanagan. Flanagan expressed his excitement, stating, “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real. I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.”
The untitled film will mark the seventh entry in the long-running franchise, which originated with the 1973 Oscar-winning classic featuring Ellen Burstyn. This new installment promises an original storyline set within the Exorcist universe, distinct from the recent Believer, which struggled to meet box office expectations.
With both Universal and Blumhouse aiming to take the franchise in a new direction following the disappointing performance of Believer, Flanagan's vision offers hope for revitalizing the series. Known for his distinctive horror storytelling in projects like The Haunting of Hill House and Gerald’s Game, Flanagan describes this upcoming Exorcist film as “the scariest movie I’ve ever made.”
Johansson's involvement signals a significant ambition for the franchise, especially after her impressive box office performance in Jurassic World: Rebirth. Despite the need to coordinate her busy schedule with other projects, this film is expected to be prioritized.
In addition to her role in the Exorcist, Scarlett Johansson recently made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She is also set to appear in Paper Tiger alongside Miles Teller and Adam Driver, further solidifying her versatility and talent across various genres.
