Bowen Yang Leaves SNL Mid-Season After Memorable Episode with Ariana Grande
NEW YORK — Bowen Yang, fresh off an impressive couple of years, is set to leave "SNL" mid-season following Saturday's episode hosted by his close friend, Ariana Grande.
Yang joined the cast as a writer in 2018, becoming a featured player the next season and then a main cast member two seasons later. He quickly became a fan favorite, earning five Emmy nominations during his tenure.
Despite inquiries about his departure, a representative for "Saturday Night Live" declined to comment, and Yang's representatives also did not respond.
In an emotional Instagram post, Yang expressed his love for working at SNL, highlighting the meaningful connections he made during his time there. "I loved working at SNL, and most of all I loved the people. I learned the value of showing up even when things seem futile," he shared.
Yang, 35, was seen in promotional material for the show alongside Grande and musical guest Cher, showing his excitement for the episode.
This news follows a significant cast shakeup before the start of Season 51, with several notable departures over the summer.
Yang had previously discussed his potential exit with SNL creator Lorne Michaels, who encouraged him to stay, assuring him that his presence was still needed on the show.
In addition to SNL, Yang has co-hosted the popular podcast “Las Culturistas” and has appeared in productions like “Wicked” and “Dicks: The Musical.”
His mid-season exit is not without precedent; similar departures have happened in the past, including Cecily Strong's exit in December 2022.
Yang's breakout moments on SNL include memorable sketches such as portraying the Titanic iceberg and various other comedic roles that showcased his talent and versatility.
Reflecting on his time, Yang acknowledged the advice given to him by Kristen Wiig: to enjoy the experience and appreciate the job, as one may miss it once it's over.
