How Taylor Swift’s Rumors Boosted Pebble Beach Golf Tournament Ticket Sales
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Taylor Swift significantly increased ticket sales for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, all without being present.
On a cool Friday morning, the atmosphere at Pebble Beach was electric, fueled by speculation that Swift would attend to support her fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, during the PGA Tour event known for pairing corporate leaders with celebrity golfers.
Unfortunately for fans, Swift did not make an appearance. Mackenzie Hughes, one of the players, noted, “It was busy without her. With her, I think it would have literally been pandemonium.”
Despite her absence, the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, which organizes the event, saw a remarkable rise in ticket sales. Tournament Director Steve John reported that announcing Kelce's participation led to over $60,000 in ticket sales within 12 hours.
While rumors of Swift's presence floated around, she was not spotted at Spyglass Hill, where Kelce played alongside professional golfer Keith Mitchell and retired NFL quarterback Alex Smith.
Nevertheless, the event thrived, with $21,000 worth of tickets sold between Thursday evening and Friday morning, just hours before Kelce's tee-off.
More than 1,000 fans gathered along the first fairway, eager to watch Kelce, who managed to hit his tee shot into the trees and onto the cart path.
Chiefs merchandise was prevalent in the crowd, highlighting the tournament's rich history of featuring notable athletes, including Ken Griffey Jr. and Tiger Woods.
This was indeed a moment tied to Swift, even though she wasn't there. John and his team prepared thoroughly, anticipating fan excitement and security needs as inquiries about Swift's attendance flooded in.
Even without Swift, the buzz continued, with CBS announcer Jim Nantz and CBS Sports president David Berson present, engaging with Kelce during the event.
Kelce opted out of interviews, but Hughes, who considers himself a casual Swift fan, described playing with Kelce as a delightful experience, noting the attention Swift's engagement has drawn to him.
“He even said it hasn't always been this way,” Hughes shared, “but since they're now engaged it's like, ‘My life has changed a little bit.’”
