U2’s New Music: A Tribute to Renee Good and Global Inspirations

LOS ANGELES — U2 is back with its first collection of original songs in nearly ten years, starting with a heartfelt tribute to Renee Good, a Minnesota mother tragically killed by a federal agent during a recent immigration operation.

The Irish rock band unveiled their six-song EP, titled “U2 - Days of Ash,” featuring the opening track “American Obituary,” dedicated to Good, who lost her life on January 7 during an encounter with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. This song serves as a poignant call for peace while honoring Good's legacy.

“Renee didn’t just believe in kindness; she lived it, fully and fiercely,” said Becca Good, her partner. “She believed every person deserved the same compassion, care, and dignity regardless of who they were.”

Released on Ash Wednesday, the EP is an immediate reaction to ongoing global events, inspired by those “fighting on the front lines of freedom.”

Frontman Bono has a history of weaving social themes into U2’s music, and these new tracks continue that tradition. They touch on various international issues, including the war in Ukraine, humanitarian crises in the Middle East, and immigration debates in the U.S. One song even references Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen, whose death last year drew widespread attention.

This marks U2's first significant release of original material since 2017’s “Songs of Experience,” although the band has remained active through touring and re-releases.

Antonio Romanucci, an attorney representing Good’s family in a civil case related to her death, remarked that the tribute conveys a broader message. “We certainly feel the urgency of the country’s situation reflected in the band’s powerful call for coming together,” he stated.

Throughout their career, U2 has leveraged their platform to advocate for various humanitarian issues. The EP was released alongside lyric videos and is available on major streaming platforms.

Good’s family expressed their gratitude for the tribute, hoping it inspires reflection and unity. “It's an incredible honor to have U2 spreading the message of peace in Renee's name,” they said. “We certainly feel the urgency of the country's situation reflected in the band's powerful call for change and coming together.”
