Shakira to Host Free Concert in Mexico City’s Zocalo This March
MEXICO CITY - Colombian pop sensation Shakira is set to perform a free concert in the iconic Zocalo square on the night of March 1. This exciting news was shared by the artist along with the city government.
In a heartfelt video message, Shakira reminisced about her previous performance in Zocalo in 2007, expressing her enthusiasm to return. "Beautiful Mexico! I want to tell you that this is going to happen again," she stated.
Shakira's recent success includes selling out over 12 shows in Mexico City's Estadio GNP during her "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran" world tour, with an impressive total of 780,000 tickets sold, averaging 65,000 attendees per night.
She is scheduled to perform at the stadium again at the end of February, just days before her free concert in Zocalo.
"You have given me so much, and I hope I can return some of the love you have shown me," she added in her message.
The Zocalo, which spans the size of approximately eight football pitches, is a popular venue for free concerts by major artists, having previously hosted icons like Justin Bieber and Rosalia.
While there were rumors last August about a potential concert, the city government confirmed it had not been organized at that time.
Shakira was recently announced as the headliner for a public concert in Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach, following past performances by stars like Lady Gaga and Madonna.
Her latest album, "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran," reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Latin albums chart and earned her a Grammy Award earlier this year, with nearly 80 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Additionally, Estadio GNP will feature K-pop sensation BTS in May, with ticket demand so high that the President of Mexico requested assistance from South Korea to arrange more concerts.
